It was one of the most popular iPad models ever but it seems as if the end is in sight for the iPad 2. Apple is in the process of winding down production on the model, that was first introduced in early 2011. It has remained incredibly popular as a lower priced option even as newer models have been discontinued.
The reason for Apple’s decision is simply based on consumer demand. The iPad 2 has continued with strong sales particularly with educational institutions and other specialised markets. Its lower price and compatibility with numerous accessories through the legacy 30-pin dock connector made it highly attractive.
However, with the introduction of the dramatically thinner iPad Air and Retina display-equipped iPad mini late last year, sales of the iPad 2 dropped dramatically and the company has apparently decided that continued production is not worthwhile. As of yet there is no word on when Apple will stop selling the iPad 2 but it is expected to be this year.
